Brief Action Planning: Motivational Interviewing Based Action Plans

Brief Action Planning

(4.5 hr workshop + 1 hr practice call follow up)

This workshop reviews three highly structured motivational interviewing based conversation tools that can be utilized when creating an action plan. The workshop also includes a brief overview of the key concepts of Motivational Interviewing & three highly structured communication strategies/tools.

    1. Give No Advice – a tool that can be used to develop engagement, begin the shift away from advice giving and allow our clients to reflect on their own motivations to change.
    2. Ask-Tell-Ask – A client-centred approach to sharing information that ensures the content is specific and relevant to the client.
    3. Brief Action Planning – A structured tool for creating action plans that incorporate the principles/practices of motivational interviewing and can be completed within 5-10 minutes.

 

By the end of the workshop participants will be able to:

    • Describe the Spirit of MI
    • Utilize three core questions during patient visits
    • Demonstrate and receive feedback on 5 core skills for facilitating patient-centred action planning
